When I went here in September we hired a classic car. Nice way to do it since it is more of a drive-by kind of place in my opinion. As far as cash, CUC is the only way to go. I had 500 Euro from a previous trip which made the exchange more favorable than my USD. Credit cards are not accepted really anywhere but we did find it easy to find ATMs. Another note, calling home and finding internet is really quite difficult to come by so try your best not to use it too much. This will greatly reduce your frustration level. Hire a tour guide if your budget allows. It made the trip immensely more enjoyable for us.
