The curtain has fallen on an era in mobile technology as HMD Global officially discontinues Nokia-branded smartphones, marking the end of a storied brand's long attempts to regain its former dominance in the market.

The Nokia brand of smartphones may be coming to an end as it has been labeled as “discontinued”. According to a report, licence holder HMD Global has relegated Nokia smartphones to a separate category, whereas it used to be grouped together with the company’s own devices.

Well, we can’t say that we didn’t expect this to happen; Nokia is no longer in the smartphone space. After a multi-year-long fight to maintain its presence in the market, all of Nokia’s smartphones have been discontinued on the HMD website. This marks the end of an era for the smartphone market, but it might not be as bad as it seems.

HMD Global came as a saviour for the Nokia phone business after Microsoft’s experiment with Lumia failed to take off.
