WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S-funded aid programs around the world have begun firing staff and shutting down or preparing to stop their operations, as the Trump administration’s unprecedented freeze on almost all foreign assistance brings their work to a sudden halt.

President Donald Trump’s 90-day pause on nearly all U.S. foreign aid, in an executive order signed during his first week in office, has ground to a halt a sprawling apparatus that stretches to nearly all corners of the world and that provides assistance ranging from weapons of war to vital medicines.

On Friday, the new head of the Office of Foreign Assistance sent a memo ordering a pause on all new aid spending and a halt to existing work.

The Trump administration’s orders have sent a chill through humanitarian organizations in Ukraine, which depend heavily on such assistance.
