Florida made up half of those bites, with eight in Volusia County, home to Daytona Beach. The county is unofficially known as the shark bite capital of the world. Many bites there were likely from juvenile and breeding blacktip sharks, which don’t yet have the ability to distinguish between humans and prey.

Unprovoked shark attacks are rare in the Bahamas, with just 34 recorded since 1580, according to the Florida Museum’s International Shark Attack File. This ranks the Caribbean country ninth among all tracked countries, with the US leading at 1,640 cases, followed by Australia with 706 and South Africa with 262, the data shows.

Rileigh Decker and Summer Layman had jumped off their friend's boat in Bimini Bay together on Friday and were swimming back when the attack occurred.
