The University of Michigan’s decision to curb diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives immediately marks a sharp turn after a decade of DEI work.

The University of Michigan is ending its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and closing its related offices, according to a letter sent Thursday from the school’s president, Santa Ono.

Those changes involve closing the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and the Office for Health Equity and Inclusion. Additionally, the university’s DEI 2.0 Strategic Plan -- which started in 2023 and was expected to run through 2028 -- will be discontinued.
