Nearly a year after an Augusta University nursing student’s tragic death on UGA’s campus, President Donald Trump signed the Laken Riley Act into law.

The Laken Riley Act passed Congress with bipartisan support as Trump makes good on his campaign-trail vow to deport illegal immigrants — beginning with those already charged or convicted of crimes, of whom more than 660,000 were present and not in US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody as of last year.

“There is no amount of change that will ever bring back our precious Laken. Our hope moving forward is that her life saves lives,” Phillips said. Minutes after the signing ceremony, Channel 2’s Richard Elliot spoke exclusively with Georgia Rep. Mike Collins, who wrote the law.
