While the eyes of the world are focused on the fateful elections in the USA, citizens of Qatar will also attend the polling stations today to vote on a referendum featuring a set of constitutional reforms, the most prominent of which is the cancellation of the country’s elections, purported by the Emir himself.

Qatar has opened a snap poll to decide whether to end its limited voting for legislative seats. The measure is likely to pass and end its short-lived experiment in electing members of the country’s advisory Shura Council.

A referendum in Qatar to scrap short-lived legislative polls has passed with more than 90% of the vote, officials said on Wednesday (November 6, 2024), ending a flirtation with democracy in the Gulf monarchy. The vote approved a raft of constitutional amendments with 90.6% of valid ballots cast by Qatari citizens, the Interior Ministry said.

Amid the U.S elections, Qatar is voting on Tuesday to decide whether to end its voting experiment of limited voting for legislative seats.
