School choice activists are undeterred by voters nationwide striking down school choice efforts on Election Day.

Voters rejected separate proposals in Colorado and Kentucky that aimed to add language supporting school choice to their states' constitutions.

Amendment 80 would enshrine school choice in the Colorado Constitution. The Associated Press made the call Thursday morning as the measure remained behind in unofficial results.

School choice, an issue that has divided parents for years, is on the ballot in three states this November: Colorado, Kentucky and Nebraska. Choice programs allow states to spend public funds for private or alternative schools.

Amid questioning from parents who cannot find good schools to enroll in, school-choice advocates need to find more and more avenues to advance their mantra, to hold on to it.

In rural areas, public schools are often the only education option. If families in Colorado, Kentucky or Nebraska are allowed to divert state funds to private education, rural communities stand to suffer the most.
