A divided Congress would require the next president to negotiate bipartisan deals on must-pass legislation and make concessions with the opposing party to move any major policy changes through Congress.

Senate Republicans have not officially selected their next leader to follow Sen. Mitch McConnell, who is expected to step down as the longest-serving Leader. And it’s not clear how the newly elected Republicans can sync with the party as newcomers in an environment that rewards longevity and loyalty.

While the entirety of the House is up for election on Tuesday, the Senate is a different story, with just one third to be decided this year.
