UNICEF is helping families meet urgent needs following flooding and landslides caused by Super Typhoon Yagi, the worst storm to hit Vietnam in 30 years.

Manufacturers say that while many factories acted early to minimize damage, roughly 10 percent of buildings in Haiphong are deeply damaged.

Vietnam’s economic growth can reach 6% in 2024 and 6.2% in 2025, following a 6.4% expansion in the first half of the year, according to the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Prior to reaching Vietnam on Saturday, Typhoon Yagi made landfall in the Chinese island of Hainan — a popular tourist destination — as well as various locations throughout the Philippines, where at least 20 people are believed to have been killed. In China, four deaths were reported with dozens of people missing in both countries.

Vietnam's economic growth in 2024 may decline by 0.15% compared to the previous forecast due to the impact of Typhoon Yagi, Asia's most powerful storm this year, according to Planning and Investment Minister Nguyen Chi Dung.

Typhoon Yagi, which hit Vietnam earlier this month, exposed the country's lack of preparedness for extreme weather and raised concerns more storms could hit the country this rainy season, experts told VOA.
