Malaysia's coastguard said on Friday it was doubling patrols in its waters to locate boats carrying undocumented Myanmar migrants, after almost 200 were detained on an island in the northwestern Malaysian state of Kedah.

alaysian police on Friday detained almost 200 migrants "believed to be Rohingya" from Myanmar after their boat ran aground on the northern resort island of Langkawi. The group comprises 68 men, 57 women, 32 boys and 39 girls, police said.

This follows the detention of 196 individuals from a boat that sank off Pantai Teluk Yu, Langkawi, early Friday morning.
