Twin Peaks wouldn't be Twin Peaks without Lynch but Fire Walk With Me and The Return are more what you're describing in terms of Lynch's role.

Season 2 gets weird and whacky for a while. Spare us a post about it. We know. It's been discussed a billion times. Yes, you should still watch it all, and no, it doesn't stay that way. Twin Peaks fundamentally changes its tone and style like every 15 episodes or so. That's just part of the fun. And it's all essential to the overall experience.
How important is the second half of season 2? (Spoilers)

But to be honest, i feel like the movie "fire walk with me" is a lot more important to understand the third season than what you missed from season 2. If you really dont like season 2 juste watch the last two episodes, the movie, and then season 3.

The first half of Season 2 is brilliant and totally up to the standard of the rest of Twin Peaks. However, it does dip in quality in the second half of the season, and several story arcs start to meander. It's not as terrible as some people make out, but both Lynch and Frost reduced their involvement for several episodes, and it definitely shows.
